Soda snakes

Greetings fellow Scientists!

This week in The Smarties Science Club we did the black snake experiment. Watch our video to see how we've done it:

Explanation

When baking soda is heated to a specific temperature carbon dioxide gas is released. The pressure created from the release of the carbon dioxide gas causes the snake to grow. The snake gets its black appearance due to the sugar being caramelized by the heat.

Are you going to try this experiment?

Soap and bath bombs

Greetings fellow Scientists!

Our latest session at The Smarties Science Club was full of beautiful scents as we were making soaps and bath bombs:

We found the recipe for the bath bombs online. Give it a go yourself!

This is what we achieved:

The soap making group used the following ingredients:
- 100 ml liquid soap/shower gel
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 20 g of gelatine
- 100  ml of water
- optional: oats (this will scrub away dead skin cells).

DNA model

Greetings fellow Scientists!

After hours of work our DNA model is finally ready!

Four dedicated students: Alfie, Alvin, Amandeep and Brandon were working extremely hard at lunchtimes and after school on this project. They were involved not only in making the model but also in collecting recyclable materials to make it.

We would like to say massive THANK YOU to the Castle Green cleaning team for helping us collect bottles and cans for our project as well as to Mr Darkins and Mr Maily who put the model up in SC3. Your help was absolutely priceless!

Chemical garden

Greetings fellow Scientists!

Today in our Science Club we were "growing" a chemical garden. We used sodium silicate (also known as waterglass) as well as a number of different solid metal salts.

What we have observed were plant-like forms which started growing in the jars:

Matthew was extremely patient with his experiment:

Visit us next week to see what's the next stop on our scientific journey!
